Chitosan Beads as Templates for Layer-by-Layer Assembly and their Application in the Sustained Release of Bioactive Agents

Abstract: Uncoated chitosan beads and chitosan beads coated with hyaluronic acid/chitosan (HA/Ch) multilayers, were used to investigate the controlled release of gentamicin sulphate (GS). Greater encapsulation efficiency was observed for the layer—by-layer multilayer coated beads. The in vitro drug release was in a slower sustained manner compared with noncoated chitosan beads. The differences in in vitro drug release results may be explained by the barrier effect of the coating that impedes diffusion of GS and supporti… Show more

“…The result confirmed that the layer of GA and AL were successfully coated on the AL70HA30_2 and AL50HA50_2 beads by using the alternate soaking technique. This technique has been reported for surface coating of materials elsewhere . In addition, the alternate soaking of silk fibroin scaffolds in 0.2 M CaCl 2 and 0.12 M Na 2 HPO 4 solutions could result in the deposition of CaPO 4 into silk fibroin porous scaffold for bone tissue engineering application…”

“…However, administration of physically entrapped rhBMP-2 into the damaged site did not achieve tissue regeneration because of the diffusion and denaturation of rhBMP-2 [17,18]. Additionally, high doses of rhBMP-2 can lead to side effects, such as carcinomas and tumor growth.…”
