“…In this study, the magnitude order for mean ΣPBDE levels in bivalves sampled from stations in the north-western Adriatic Sea is comparable to those reported by Giandomenico et al [14] and Bianco et al [13] for other Mediterranean areas. However, the higher concentration of ΣPBDEs detected in this study is six times higher than any other value reported for Mediterranean Sea, including Italian coasts.…”

“…Although numerous studies were conducted to monitor levels of PBDEs in various environmental compartments [3] and biological samples [8][9][10][11], only few measurements of PBDEs in seashells are available in Italy [12][13][14]. Moreover, regarding the northern Adriatic zone and Venice lagoon, no literature was found.…”

“…The levels of DDE were found in accordance with the concentration levels of mussels from the northern Adriatic Sea (1.6 -3 ng/g fresh weight) [19] and from Croatian coast of the Adriatic Sea (in the range 0.57 -2.61 ng/g ww) [3]. It's not surprising that p,p'-DDT were not found in mussels, as the use of these compounds in Bulgaria was prohibited in the late 1970s and the persistent half-life of DDT in aquatic environment has been suggested to be approximately 10-20 years [20]. DDT starts to degrade to DDE after discharge into the environment through photolysis or metabolic degradation by organisms.…”

“…The six PCB congeners (IUPAC № 28, 52, 101, 138, 153 and 180) have been selected by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) for their abundance in environmental samples and have also been recommended by the European Union as indicators of PCB contamination [20].…”

“…Relative higher concentrations of PCBs and other contaminants had been detected especially around the Bari port area (e.g. Guzzella and De Paolis, 1994;Giandomenico et al, 2013;Mali et al, 2015).…”
