Chondroblastoma-like osteosarcoma: a case report and review

Abstract: Chondroblastoma-like osteosarcomas are extremely rare malignancies having varying clinical, radiological and histological features. Their rarity causes challenges in both diagnosis and clinical management. They are often misdiagnosed as benign lesions. Their accurate diagnosis is important because they require adequate treatment. Misdiagnosed lesions or undertreatment may result in recurrences. We report a case of chondroblastoma-like osteosarcoma arising in the left first metatarsal bone with tarsometatarsal … Show more

“…We also report here the H3F3 mutational status of a tumor combining typical areas of chondroblastoma and areas of high-grade conventional osteosarcoma, with a sudden transition between the two components. In view of these tumors, very few cases of which have been described in the literature, 16,17 the diagnosis of malignant chondroblastoma rather than chondroblastoma-like osteosarcoma could be raised. This sample exhibited a rare mutation of H3F3A (K37M), never to our knowledge described in the other giant cell-rich tumors.…”

“…Distinguishing these two neoplasms is vital for the delivery of appropriate clinical treatment, which involves neoadjuvant chemotherapy for patients with osteosarcoma. There is an exceptionally rare variant of osteosarcoma known as chondroblastoma‐like osteosarcoma: this tumour resembles the histological phenotype of its benign counterpart, but shows nuclear atypia and has a permeative growth pattern . Unfortunately, we have not had the opportunity to test such cases.…”

“…Osteosarcoma has a fatality rate of up to 80%, as well as high malignancy and invasive ability. Most cases are diagnosed during the late stage of the disease (Aycan et al, 2015;Liu et al, 2015b). Recent advances in chemotherapy, radiation therapy, biological therapy, and surgical technology have allowed a vast majority of osteosarcoma patients to receive limb salvage treatment.…”
