Chondrosarcoma: A Rare Misfortune in Aging Human Cartilage? The Role of Stem and Progenitor Cells in Proliferation, Malignant Degeneration and Therapeutic Resistance

Abstract: Unlike other malignant bone tumors including osteosarcomas and Ewing sarcomas with a peak incidence in adolescents and young adults, conventional and dedifferentiated chondrosarcomas mainly affect people in the 4th to 7th decade of life. To date, the cell type of chondrosarcoma origin is not clearly defined. However, it seems that mesenchymal stem and progenitor cells (MSPC) in the bone marrow facing a pro-proliferative as well as predominantly chondrogenic differentiation milieu, as is implicated in early sta… Show more

“…Proliferation of AC cells is modulated by fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) [22,23] and transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) [24] signaling, in addition to many other effects. Therefore, particularly FGF2, TGF-β, and inflammatory cytokine signaling in combination with their miRNA regulation in human AC have been reviewed.…”

“…It is a malignant cartilage‐forming tumor that frequently occurs in the pelvis . CS mostly affects people in their 40s to 70s . Wide local excision has become the mainstay treatment because this tumor is highly resistant to chemotherapy and radiation .…”

“…Chondrosarcomas are cartilaginous tumors, characterized by the production of hyaline cartilage [145,146]. Unlike Ewing and most osteosarcomas, these cartilage malignances are typically diagnosed in persons between 40 and 70 years of age [147]. Moreover, despite the advantages of DDS, since 2014 to the best of our knowledge none approach was developed to treat chondrosarcomas.…”
