Chondrosarcoma of the Skull Base: A Case Study and Literature Review

Abstract: Chondrosarcomas (CSs) are rare malignant tumors composed of cells derived from the transformed chondrocytes. Only 2% of the total cases of CS are found at the skull base, thus representing a 0.1-0.2% prevalence. We present the case of a patient with CS at the middle cranial fossa who was admitted for surgery to the Burdenko National Medical Research Center of Neurosurgery. In addition, we engage in a review of the literature to discuss the current approaches to the diagnostics and surgery of CS and delve deep … Show more

“…Surgery remains the primary treatment modality, ranging from curettage and bone grafting to wide excision or amputation, depending on the specific circumstances. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are less commonly employed and are typically reserved for high‐grade or recurrent tumors 12 . A marginal resection is a surgical approach to remove a tumor with a minimal margin of healthy tissue, aiming to preserve functionality and minimize potential complications.…”

“…Most of these arise in the skull base, developing from espheno-petrous and petro-clival synchondrosis that contain cartilage. Exceptionally, and based on isolated case reports, they can arise in convexity meninges; but the dura does not normally contain cartilage, so few hypotheses have been proposed about their origin like the presence of abnormal embryonal rests of cartilaginous tissue or multipotential mesenchymal cells in the meninges [ 2 , 8 , 9 ].…”

“…Radical surgical resection is the treatment of choice, and adjuvant radiotherapy is often considered, especially after incomplete resection [ 8 , 9 ]. Therefore, the relevance of an appropriate pre-surgical diagnosis orientation could be very important when facing a dural mass as it may directly impact patient management.…”

“…При лечении остеосарком в дополнение к хирургическим методам лечения используют специализированные протоколы химиотерапии. При неполной резекции хондробластического варианта конвенциональной остеосаркомы в протокол лечения добавляют лучевую терапию [9,10].…”
