Choreographing digital love: materiality, emotionality, and morality in video-mediated communication between Chinese migrant parents and their left-behind children

Abstract: Video-mediated communication (VMC) has become particularly important for geographically dispersed families. “…The introduction of media theory has expanded human geographers' understanding of place and digital technology (Halegoua & Polson, 2021;Pan, 2022). For example, the relationship between media and place construction, as well as how media influences place expression, has become a focus of study (Gan, 2023;Saker & Evans, 2016;Wang & Zhang, 2022). Paul Adams, a human geographer who built upon the ideas of his mentor Yifu Tuan, has further systematized the relationship between media, space, and place.…”

“…Scholars also argue that digital technologies affect our experience of place in a disorienting way, as they inundate us with information and images that blur the boundaries between what is real and what is not (Dincelli & Yayla, 2022;Fraser, 2023;Gan, 2023;Osborne & Jones, 2022). This blurring of real and virtual reality exacerbates extreme views about who belongs where (Relph, 2021).…”

“…These long-distance communication can help bridge the spatial gap between family members ( 63 , 64 ), as indicated by the compensation theory ( 65 ). Research has demonstrated that migrant parents can establish positive communication with their children through tools such as video calls ( 66 ). Smart-phones offer new spaces for LBC, which can serve as an important supplement to emotion socialization of them ( 67 ).…”

“…Yet, given that the macro financial situation of rural families is unlikely to be shaken in the short term, more recent studies found on Bronfenbrenner's Ecological System Theory have shifted their focus from the distal economic context to the proximal processes in promoting rural kids' development (e.g., Gan, 2023;Peng, 2021;Su et al, 2017;Wang et al, 2019;Wu et al, 2015;Zhang et al, 2021).…”
