Chronic changes in skeletal muscle histology and function in peripheral arterial disease.

Abstract: BACKGROUND Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is associated with an impairment in exercise performance and muscle function that is not fully explained by the reduced leg blood flow during exercise. Regensteiner et al 22 compared the PT in plantar flexion and dorsiflexion movements among PAD patients and age-matched control subjects, reporting strength deficits of >20%.
