Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy: a prevalence study in south east England

Abstract: Although there are now widely accepted diagnostic criteria for chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) there are few epidemiological data. A prevalence study was performed in the four Thames health regions, population 14 049 850. The prevalence date was 1 January 1995. “…In order to assess the long-term comparative cost-effectiveness of IVIg and prednisolone it would be necessary to consider carefully the impact of side effects on quality of life and cost. It is thought that the side effects of IVIg treatment are generally minor [1,22] but there is some dispute regarding their frequency. Brannagan et al [23] found that 59% of patients receiving IVIg suffered some adverse effect and Bertorini et al [24] reported a figure of 81%.…”

“…Older age groups are more likely to have a chronic progressive course of CIDP, whereas a relapsing-remitting pattern is frequently observed in younger patients [3]. The crude prevalence rate of CIDP in different countries has been reported to range between 0.8 and 7.7 per 100,000 population [4][5][6], and falls in between these extremes (3.58 per 100,000 population) for two North-Western Italian Regions (Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta) [7].…”
