Chronic Inflammatory Diseases and Endothelial Dysfunction

Abstract: Chronic inflammatory diseases are associated with increases in cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and subclinical atherosclerosis as well as early-stage endothelial dysfunction screening using the FMD method (Flow Mediated Dilation). This phenomenon, referred to as accelerated pathological remodeling of arterial wall, could be attributed to traditional risk factors associated with atherosclerosis. Several new non-invasive techniques have been used to study arterial wall's structural and functional alterations. These… Show more

“…Inflammation and complement depositions in the vessel wall are likely to contribute to vascular stiffness. Based on biopsy findings, also inflammation in the myocardium and small vessels may contribute to premature CVD in ARDs (cardiac ischemia and heart failure) (Castellon and Bogdanova, 2016) There is an enormous need for an improved CVD prevention in ARDs. Studies examining the effect of DMARDs/biologics on vascular inflammation and CV risk are warranted.…”

“…Atherosclerosis is associated with progressive narrowing of the artery lumen, causing major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs), including myocardial infarction and stroke . Chronic inflammation diseases of the vessel wall are associated with increases in atherosclerosis and early‐stage endothelial dysfunction . Dendritic cells (DCs) are specialized antigen‐presenting cells, positioned within the immune system to bridge innate and adaptive immunity .…”

“…The pathogenic mechanisms responsible for hypoperfusion-mediated white matter lesions include blood-brain barrier (BBB) leakage [9, 10], inflammation [11, 12] and oxidative stress [13], which collectively lead to apoptosis of oligodendrocyte cells and demyelination. Demyelination or loss of sheath is a critical feature of white matter lesions induced by cerebral hypoperfusion [14].…”
