Chronological Profiling of Plasma Native Peptides after Hepatectomy in Pigs: Toward the Discovery of Human Biomarkers for Liver Regeneration

Abstract: Liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy (PHx) is a time-dependent process, which is tightly regulated by multiple signaling cascades. Failure of this complex process leads to posthepatectomy liver failure (PHLF), which is associated with a high rate of mortality. Thus, it is extremely important to establish a useful biomarker of liver regeneration to help prevent PHLF. Here, we hypothesized that alterations in the plasma peptide profile may predict liver regeneration following PHx and hence we set up a di… Show more

“…By contrast, pigs are non-primate mammals that closely resemble humans in terms of anatomy, genetics, and physiology as well as lipid metabolism. As model organisms, they allow serial examinations to be conducted using the same experimental set [7, 8]. To generate a swine model of NAFLD associated HCC model, we adopted Microminipig (MMP) registered with the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries as an experimental strain of swine.…”

“…It could also be used to show dairy product deterioration and to monitor the health status of cows [14,15]. In pigs, peptidomes have been reported in brain tissue, gastropancreatic digestion of milk proteins, plasma after hepatectomy to search for peptide indicators of liver regeneration, and epididymal sperm maturation [16][17][18][19]. In our present study, we have discovered a number of novel peptides in NT and UDT ( Fig.…”

“…Five studies (12% of all articles) had a non-survival design [34,38,49,53,63]. The average study duration was 13 ± 11 days, ranging from 5 days [46] to 42 days (5%) [54,60], while 7 days was the most used follow-up period (32% of all studies) [30,[39][40][41]47,49,50,55,62,64,65,69] (Table 1).…”
