Chylothorax and Cholesterol Pleural Effusion

Abstract: A chylothorax and a cholesterol pleural effusion represent the two forms of lipid effusions encountered. Traditionally, a lipid pleural effusion is characterized by the presence of milky fluid. Although these two effusions often share a similar pleural fluid appearance due to the high lipid concentration, they have major differences in the pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis, predisposing conditions, and management of these effusions. A chylothorax is defined by the presence of chyle in the pleural … Show more

“…pathways as for the laterality of hepatic hydrothorax (Huggins 2010). Pleurodesis has been successful as a result, and it may have been a reasonable treatment for our patient because chylothorax was possibly a result of the pleural changes caused by long-term inflammation or obstruction of a peripheral lymphatic vessel, not the collapse of the thoracic duct.…”

“…A chylothorax eseteinek többsége exsudatív jellegű, de az esetek körülbelül 15%-ában transsudativ is lehet. A transsudativ folyadékgyülem más, például lymphomát, amyloidosist, hepaticus (portalis hypertensio/cirrhosis) vagy kardiális etiológiát jelez [1,[17][18][19][20][21].…”

“…Nontraumatic chylothorax results from increased superior vena cava pressure due to malignancy, lymphangioleiomyomatosis, sarcoidosis, cirrhosis, tuberculosis, or thrombosis causing venous obstruction 2,3) . As the correction of underlying causes is the first and best treatment option for nontraumatic chylothorax, the causative factors should be evaluated.…”
