Ciliates in a waste stabilization pond system in Mexico

Abstract: A protozoological survey was performed on a waste-stabilization pond to isolate, identify, and determine the incidence of ciliates present in these waters. The correlation between the species found and the physicochemical parameters was investigated. One hundred and eighty samples were analyzed from February 1983 to February 1984. Free-living ciliates isolated include: Carchesium polypinum Linnaeus, Vorticella microstoma Ehrenberg, Vorticella convallaria Linnaeus, Didinium balbiani Fabr6-Domergue, Amphileptus … Show more

“…About 10 000 tons of sewage is produced daily; however, the current sewage treatment plants are inadequate and in those that do function, the treatment is often not complete whereby large quantities of organic matter, Protozoa, and bacteria persist [4]. The water is often used for industrial or commercial purposes (such as car washing) and to fill freshwater bodies such as Lake Xochimilco (Mexico City) or Lake Zumpango (State of Mexico).…”

“…Ciliates, rotifers, cladocerans, and copepods generally dominate the zooplankton community in freshwater ecosystems including sewage stabilization ponds [3,4]. Among these groups, in terms of biomass, cladocerans form the largest group due to their large size and parthenogenetic reproduction.…”
