“…Of all patients in the trial, 11 of 51 on cimetidine rebled compared to 12 of 50 on placebo; cimetidine was of no benefit in the elderly, in severe bleeding, or in the 70 patients who had a peptic ulcer identified at endoscopy. Similarly Hoare, Bradby and Hawkins (1979) reported a trial of 66 patients admitted with bleeding peptic ulceration; results on the first 40 patients in this trial had been previously published (Dykes and Hoare, 1977). Of patients with DU, only 2 of 14 treated with cimetidine rebled compared to 10 of 19 on placebo, the majority of these patients were over 65 years old and cimetidine significantly reduced rebleeding in the elderly group (P<0 05).…”

“…The straightness of the line obtained after plotting served as a control of the experimental conditions, any change in its slope indicating an altered perfusion during the recording. Total gastric blood flow was calculated from the linear plot of the A-elimination curves, using the equation proposed by Zierler14 as modified by Bassingthwaighte.15 16 (2) where Cp = peak value of recorded radioactivity; CT = radioactivity at time T.…”

“…The discovery of the H2 blockers, the introduction of the first one without major side effects-cimetidine-and the successful early trials in the production of healing of both gastric and duodenal ulcers led to early optimism that cimetidine and subsequent H2 blockers would be valuable agents in patients with intestinal 763 A. E. Read bleeding. In the event they have proved disappointing in patients with bleeding chronic ulcers (Siddio et al, 1979;La Brooy et al, 1979), though at least one group have found some advantage in the patient with bleeding gastric ulcer (Hoare et al, 1979). Although they are given to the patient who bleeds from a chronic ulcer, they are given to heal the ulcer and not to stop the bleeding.…”
