CIMMYT. Assessing the impact of natural resource management research: the case of zero tillage in India's rice-wheat systems.

Abstract: This chapter reviews and synthesizes the experience with zero tillage (ZT) in the irrigated Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP) of India so as to better understand and document the impact of this technology and related research. It first introduces the ZT technology in the context of India's rice-wheat systems, including a brief historic overview of the related R&D. Succeeding sections look into ZT adoption, review the farm-level impacts of ZT, estimate the welfare impacts, and reviews the environmental impacts. It… Show more

“…Quite apart from field workers, the farmers themselves often lack education and thus are excluded from some of the knowledge streams which provide information on conservation agriculture. Small scale itself can also be a constraint for the efficient utilization of much conservation agriculture farm equipment, e.g., zero till drills, which forces the commercialization of machinery provision services or the formation of farmer groups for resource/equipment sharingand each has attendant additional transaction costs (Laxmi et al, 2007).…”

“…In two years, in Haryana, over 100,000 h of wheat was planted this way. This led to a demand for the new planting equipment, a rise in sales of ZT drills and subsequently increase in ZT wheat in the IGP of South Asia (Hobbs et al ., 2008; Laxmi et al ., 2007; Rehman et al ., 2015).…”

“…The objective of the paper is to assess how the assumed counterfactual case in terms of accelerating technology deployment affects various impact assessment indicators of adaptive agricultural research. The paper does so through the empirical case of zero tillage wheat in Indiarevisiting earlier work by Gupta (2007a and2007b). The subsequent section presents the underlying zero tillage case study and methods.…”
