CircRNAs: Insights into Gastric Cancer

Abstract: Background: Gastric cancer (GC) is recorded as the fifth most common cancer globally. The classic resemblance of early symptoms of chronic gastritis including nausea, dysphagia, and dyspepsia with GC is the current challenge limiting the early diagnosis of GC. The current diagnostic procedures of GC are limited due to their invasive nature. This directs the research question toward alternative approaches, specifically at the molecular level. Recent advances in molecular re… Show more

“…The rapid development of biological technologies has contributed to the in‐depth exploration of functional circRNAs 17 . CircRNAs are characterized as being stable, specific, and well conserved and have been suggested to be vital participants in carcinogenesis, making them possible candidates for cancer screening 18‐20 . Accordingly, circRNAs have attracted more attention in tumor pathogenesis and biomarker research in recent years.…”

In the field of GC, a number of abnormally expressed circRNAs have been discovered, and their functions and molecular mechanisms have been revealed.…”

“…During the progress of EMT, the expression of mesenchymal markers, such as N-cadherin, vimentin, and dense protein, are increased, while the expression of epithelial markers, such as E-cadherin, is decreased. A large number of studies have shown that circRNAs can regulate EMT transcription factors (EMT-TFs: Snail, Slug, Twist, and Zeb family) and EMT-related signaling pathways (TGF-β/Smad, Wnt/β-catenin, PI3K/AKT, MEK/ERK, JAK2/STAT5 and Hedgehog signaling pathways) [29]. Herein, according to the ranking of cancer DALYs (disability-adjusted life years) from 2010 to 2019 [30], we will mainly introduce the detailed molecular mechanism of circRNA regulating the EMT pathway via sponging miRNA in the first eight solid tumors (Figure 2).…”

“…A lot of research has been done on the gene expression profile of GC. The exact molecular mechanism of the GC is far from fully uncovered [9]. There is considerable need to find more potential for effective therapeutic strategies.…”
