Circular data matrix fiducial system and robust image processing for a wearable vision-inertial self-tracker

Abstract: A wearable low-power hybrid vision-inertial tracker has been demonstrated based on a flexible sensor fusion core architecture, which allows easy reconfiguration by plugging-in different kinds of sensors. A particular prototype implementation consists of one inertial measurement unit and one outward-looking wide-angle Smart Camera, with a built-in DSP to run all required image-processing tasks. The Smart Camera operates on newly designed 2-D bar-coded fiducials printed on a standard black-and-white printer. The… Show more

“…The majority of the markers described in the literature use black-and-white patterns [e.g. 4,8,12,13,19,21,22,30]. In this case, detection relies on the shape properties of the pattern in the marker.…”

“…As mentioned in the previous section, the most convenient vision-based method for MR is based on fiducial markers [5][6][7]. Such markers should have a common and obtrusive appearance so that they can be found from input images and should include unique IDs for identification.…”

“…To handle variable lighting, [23] uses a rulebased approach that groups samples of similar color that are likely to all belong to the same fiducial. [98] uses homomorphic image processing, which is designed to eliminate the effect of non-uniform lighting. The thresholding operation is applied not on the image itself, but on the gradient of the logarithm of the image.…”
