Circular polarization analyzer with polarization tunable focusing of surface plasmon polaritons

Abstract: A practical circular polarization analyzer (CPA) that can selectively focus surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) at two separate locations, according to the helicity of the circularly polarized light, is designed and experimentally verified in the terahertz frequency range. The CPA consists of fishbone-slit units and is designed using the simulated annealing algorithm. By differentially detecting the intensities of the two SPPs focuses, the helicity of the incident circularly polarized light can be obtained and t… Show more

“…The polarizationindependent focusing of transmitted wave and the chiralitycontrolled focusing of SPPs are studied and analyzed in detail. The multifunctional metasurface lens can be fabricated with micro photolithography and measured with THz near field and far field imaging system [18,25]. Moreover, the proposed methodology can be extended to the visible region by scaling the structure and considering the deviation of wavelength of SPPs and free space light.…”

“…18) and judiciously selecting LCs. Such active spin-selected lens could be used as THz polarization filters or analyzers [34] and may find practical applications in polarization-based THz imaging and wireless communication [35,36]. Since many biomolecules possess THz fingerprints and are sensitive to incident polarization, the lens could be further applied to biomedical detections [37,38].…”

“…Combining the 2D materials, the modulation of excitation light and the design of subwavelength structure should enable a more flexible control over SPP fields in the future. Compared with static SPP devices, dynamical SPP devices are multifunctional and more efficient, which makes them a powerful tool in applications like on-chip communications [10,11,83,111], polarization analyses [70,112,113], particle manipulation [69,114,115], and super resolution imaging [38,116].…”
