Circularly polarized guided modes in dielectrically chiral photonic crystal fiber

Abstract: The effect of dielectric chirality on the polarization states and mode indices of guided modes in photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is investigated by a modified plane-wave expansion (PWE) method. Using a solid-core chiral PCF as a numerical example, we show that circular polarization is the eigenstate of the fundamental mode. Mode index divergence between right-handed circularly polarized (RCP) and left-handed circularly polarized (LCP) states is demonstrated. Chirality's effect on mode index and circular birefrin… Show more

“…As χ 12 increases, mode coupling occurs between TE 01 and odd HE 21 mode as well as even HE 21 mode and TM 01 mode. This is because linear polarization (in particular y-polarization in the paper) is preferred by the bianisotropic medium as χ 12 increases, the four vector modes evolve into linearly polarized modes and the degeneracy between odd HE 21 and even HE 21 mode is broken due to required mode coupling. Typical mode profiles of x-and y-polarized odd and even modes as marked by f1-f4 in Fig.…”

“…To keep the discussion simple, the first high order vector mode group, i.e. TE 01 , odd HE 21 , even HE 21 and TM 01 , is analyzed. 21 and even HE 21 modes are degenerate due to circular symmetry.…”

“…[91][92][93][94][95] Chirality is ubiquitous at various hierarchical levels from the galactic, macroscopic, nanoscopic, supramolecular to molecular and subatomic scales. [96][97][98][99] It is worth noting that CNCs are typically nanoscale chiral photonic crystal materials that can be isolated from various natural plants and wood. It is a highly crystalline nanorod with a high aspect ratio that can self-assemble and form a left-handed chiral nematic LC in a water suspension.…”

“…The former relies on the helical arrangement of achiral building blocks, while the later bases on the intrinsic chirality of the composed materials. 2 To date, the research community mainly focuses on chiral photonic crystals of structural helicity. These structures are ubiquitous in nature, such as beetles 3 and butterfly.…”
