Circulating 25-Hydroxyvitamin D and the Risk of Rarer Cancers: Design and Methods of the Cohort Consortium Vitamin D Pooling Project of Rarer Cancers

Abstract: The Cohort Consortium Vitamin D Pooling Project of Rarer Cancers (VDPP), a consortium of 10 prospective cohort studies from the United States, Finland, and China, was formed to examine the associations between circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations and the risk of rarer cancers. Cases (total n = 5,491) included incident primary endometrial (n = 830), kidney (n = 775), ovarian (n = 516), pancreatic (n = 952), and upper gastrointestinal tract (n = 1,065) cancers and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (n = 1,… Show more

“…Season-standardized 25(OH)D values were calculated by adding the residuals from the regression model to the overall population mean. Use of regression residuals enabled us to use standardized quartiles of plasma 25(OH)D in the conditional logistic regression analysis, regardless of the season of blood collection (26,27). In the second approach, season-specific quartiles using the 4-category season variable for plasma 25(OH)D were created.…”

“…In 2010, the Vitamin D Pooling Project of Rarer Cancers reported its pooled data from 10 prospective cohort studies examining the association between circulating 25(OH)D and the following cancers: endometrial, kidney, ovarian, pancreatic, upper gastrointestinal, and nonHodgkin lymphoma (32). Data from this project for ovarian (28) and pancreatic (29) cancers were discussed above, and 25(OH)D was not associated with any of the other organ sites (Table 1) (33)(34)(35)(36).…”
