“…The results of resuscitation of cardiac arrest following myocardial infarction are disappointing, recovery in 16 per cent being regarded as a satisfactory survival rate (Klassen et al 1963) (Smith and Anthonisen 1965). In this paper reasons are put forward to suggest that controlled mechanical ventilation with 100 per cent oxygen may provide a fruitful field of prophylactic management (Peaston 1964), since if there is such a poor prognosis once cardiac arrest is established, the clear need is to prevent its occurrence.…”
