Circulating interleukin‐6 levels are elevated in adult T‐cell leukaemia/lymphoma patients and correlate with adverse clinical features and survival

Abstract: Summary.We measured the circulating levels of interleukin (IL)-6 in adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma (ATL) patients using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The IL-6 levels in 59 ATL patients (median 8·2 pg/ml; range < 1·0 to 185·7 pg/ml) were significantly higher than in 30 healthy controls (median < 1·0 pg/ml; range < 1·0 to 3·5 pg/ml) (P < 0·0001) or 32 human T-lymphotropic virus type-I (HTLV-I) carriers (median 4·2 pg/ml; range < 1·0 to 13·3 pg/ml) (P ¼ 0·002). Among the ATL patients, the IL-6 levels in … Show more

“…Conditioning therapy probably activates tissue macrophages leading to a cytokine storm and activation of HTLV-1-infected cells. The CRP level is controlled by circulating IL-6 levels, which are elevated in ATLL patients [35,36]. This high IL-6 level may be the reason why STAT3, which is downstream of IL-6 signaling, is constitutively activated in ATLL cells in vivo [37].…”

“…Growing evidence suggests prognostic importance because increased CRP levels are associated with the production of cytokines from tumour cells (Kurzrock, 1997;Legouffe et al, 1998, Yamamura et al, 1998. For myeloma it is well known that interleukin-6 (IL-6) plays a crucial role in the cytokine network, regulating the growth and survival of myeloma cells and stimulating the acute-phase protein synthesis, notably C-reactive protein (CRP) (Lauta, 2003).…”

“…Previous studies considered ATLL as a single disease entity, although its clinical features are quite diverse and increased production of cytokines, such as IL-6 (Th2 type), may explain the diversity of clinical features. 19 Therefore, we believe that ATLL is quite diverse with regard to cytokine production.…”
