Circulating proteins as predictive and prognostic biomarkers in breast cancer

Abstract: Breast cancer (BC) is the most common cancer and among the leading causes of cancer death in women. It is a heterogeneous group of tumours with numerous morphological and molecular subtypes, making predictions of disease evolution and patient outcomes difficult. Therefore, biomarkers are needed to help clinicians choose the best treatment for each patient. For the last years, studies have increasingly focused on biomarkers obtainable by liquid biopsy. Circulating proteins (from serum or plasma) can be used for… Show more

“…It is hoped that in the future the biomarker research in youth with neurodevelopmental disorders will benefit from larger sam ples, consistent methods, concerted efforts focusing on replica tion, building on recent consortia and other promising ongoing efforts 82,83 . This research should follow the lead of biomarker research in adults with severe mental disorders 84,85 and of other areas of medicine 86,87 , that can inform appropriate assessment techniques. Future research should focus on machine learning and other advanced data analytic techniques as well as multivar iable and multilevel biomarker approaches that may arguably be best suited to match the complexities of mental disorders.…”

“…Several circulating proteins have been identified in the plasma and serum of patients with breast cancer [ 19 ] but we still lack highly sensitive and specific biomarkers. Below, we discuss some of the pertinent proteins that were significantly altered among the different groups (B/N, M/M and M/B) in our analysis of saliva and/or serum and their relevance for a potential biomarkers for breast cancer.…”

“…For example, an increase in hepatocyte growth factors was shown in studies to be correlated with breast cancers as a risk factor and a high risk in metastatic progression [ 28 ]. However, interestingly, an increase in hepatocyte growth factors was paradoxically associated with long relapse-free survival [ 29 ]. In a systematic review and meta-analysis, circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) was associated with a high risk of relapse; however, the review mentions there was heterogeneity of the studies, that all studies could not be included since relevant data were not available, and the studies used different techniques to quantify ctDNA [ 30 ].…”
