Circulating Sestrin Levels Are Increased in Hypertension Patients

Abstract: Background. Sestrins (Sesns), a group of oxidative stress-related proteins, have been reported to be involved in various cardiovascular diseases, including aortic dissection and chronic heart failure. This study is aimed at investigating the level of circulating Sesn1, Sesn2, and Sesn3 in hypertension patients. Methods. Plasma levels of Sesn1, Sesn2, and Sesn3 in 400 hypertensive patients and 100 normotensive subjects were detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. The hypertension patients… Show more

“…The following are examples in the way Sestrins are involved with symptoms of aging. Sesn2 is induced in patients with hypertension (Fang et al, 2020) and overexpressed Sesn2 was protective against cardiomyopathy (Li et al, 2019;Wang P. et al, 2019) and cardiac dysfunction via extracellular signal-regulated protein kinases (ERK)1/2 inhibition (Dong B. et al, 2017) and liver kinase B (LKB)1-mediated AMPK activation (Morrison et al, 2015). Sesn2 also prevents age-related intolerance to myocardial infarction via AMPK/peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC-1α) pathway (Quan et al, 2018), ischemia and reperfusion injury (Quan et al, 2017), atrial fibrillation (Dong Z. et al, 2017), radiation-induced myocardium damage (Zeng et al, 2016) in human and rodent models.…”

“…[52] Oxidative stress is the key cause of DOX-induced heart failure, which leads to the decrease of cardiomyocytes and the abnormality of cardiac function. [53,54] Mitochondria are the main target organelles of doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity. [55,56] DOX has high affinity with cardiolipin and forms a complex, which makes DOX anchor on the inner membrane of mitochondria, destroys the function of the mitochondrial respiratory chain, and triggers the production of ROS.…”

“…Sesns have also been reported to prevent diseases such as aortic dissection, ischemic heart disease, diabetes, insulin resistance, obesity, and hyperuricemia/gout [ 107 , 108 , 132 , 189 , 190 ]. Patients with hypertension showed elevated circulating Sesns levels, which provides a clue for preventing clinical hypertension [ 190 ].…”
