Cities, municipal solid waste management, and climate change: Perspectives from the South

Abstract: Climate change is arguably the most debated and contentious environmental issue today. Hitherto neglected, the role of cities is beginning to attract attention particularly within the academic milieu. Cities are acknowledged as development drivers but also considered major drivers of climate change as a result of activities associated with the release of harmful substances such as carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases. Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSWM) is noted as a major contributor to climate change due … Show more

“…Waste management has numerous impacts on climate change and the environment, such as landfills, waste recycling, incineration, and composting [45]. Climate change is expected to produce more frequent and powerful natural disasters that will increase the amount of disaster-related waste generation.…”

“…The most advanced and sustainable, Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management Systems must maintain an equilibrium between the separately collected (SC) waste fractions and the Residual Municipal Solid Waste (RMSW), both of them being suitable for material and energy recovery. The environmental citizenship and waste services play an important role in the RMSW treatment options [20][21]. Furthermore, in some regions the political differences and unstable legislative framework can recede, obstruct or cause modifications from the original waste management plan, leading to the community confusion, slowing the implementation of the industrial recovery processes and usage of valuable secondary products that can be put on the market, delaying the environmental and economic impact.…”

“…This is expected to outpace the rate of population growth by more than double in 2050 (World Bank Group, 2018). The culminating effect of this unsustainable manner of waste generation is the cause of ever increasing reports of recurrent urban health problems and climate change/variability (Onyanta, 2016). For example, in India, most sicknesses recorded are attributed to environmental pollutionresulting from improper waste management (Burke et al, 2012).…”
