Citizen Sensing: An Action-Orientated Framework for Citizen Science

Abstract: Citizen Sensing, a correlative of Citizen Science, employs low-cost sensors to evidence local environmental issues and empowers citizens to use the data they collect. Whilst motivations for participation can vary, communities affected by pollution frequently have changemaking as their goal. Social innovation is closely aligned with citizen sensing, however the process of co-creating practices and solutions with citizens who wish to shape their world can be highly complex to design. Therefore, our research arti… Show more

“…We interpret portable as “portable by patients or consumers”; therefore, portable devices operated by health care professionals (eg, digital stethoscopes) were excluded. We note that the definition of DBMs may overlap with sensor applications in the general population, such as citizen sensing [ 24 ]. In this search, we only considered systematic reviews that use digital devices deployed by clinicians or patients to collect clinical data in the context of treatment.…”

“…Citizen sensing-where people act as sensors of urban problems-is based on citizen science (Coulson et al, 2021). It is possible to explore citizen sensing of urban problems in two broad ways: (a) exploring sensing of individual citizens through an open list questionnaire, a complaint hotline, a mobile app, and so forth, which allows to include many citizens (Peng et al, 2022); and (b) citizen sensing workshop that allows exchange of views between participating citizens but includes a smaller number of citizens (MacPhail and Colla, 2020).…”

“…Involving members directly working with the targeted citizen science group at this stage was important to reflect on the appropriateness of employed methods. Coulson and Woods also emphasize the importance of co-created booklets to assist participants in monitoring environmental pollution in their surroundings [17]. For the Plastic Pirates a full co-creation approach involving school-children was not used because of time constraints and experiences of successful river and beach litter studies of the citizen science programs Científicos de la Basura (Litter Scientists, http://www.cientificosdelabasura.cl/en/) and Following the Pathways of Platic Litter [16,[18][19].…”
