Clash: New Multiple Images Constraining the Inner Mass Profile of Macs J1206.2–0847

Abstract: We present a strong-lensing analysis of the galaxy cluster MACS J1206.2-0847 (z=0.44) using UV, Optical, and IR, HST/ACS/WFC3 data taken as part of the CLASH multi-cycle treasury program, with VLT/VIMOS spectroscopy for some of the multiply-lensed arcs. The CLASH observations, combined with our mass-model, allow us to identify 47 new multiply-lensed images of 12 distant sources. These images, along with the previously known arc, span the redshift range 1 z 5.5, and thus enable us to derive a detailed mass dist… Show more

“…For the χ 2 we used a positional error of σ pos = 1. 4, which was found to be a reasonable value accounting for large-scale structure and matter along the line of sight (see Zitrin et al 2012b and references therein). The multiple-image input comprises 35 constraints, where the number of degrees of freedom (dof) is 26 and 22 for the eGaussian and eNFW models, respectively, yielding, correspondingly, χ 2 /dof = 2.18 and χ 2 /dof = 1.35.…”

“…Indeed, various clusters around z ∼ 0.5 show prominent lensing features (giant arcs and many multiple images; Zitrin et al 2012aZitrin et al , 2012b. Interestingly, the largest gravitational lens, MACS J0717.5+3745 (z = 0.55; Zitrin et al 2009a), is formed by several merging clumps possibly at the tip of a filament (Limousin et al 2012;Jauzac et al 2012).…”

“…Kneib et al 1996) to constrain the detailed mass distribution in cluster cores as well as to probe the mass distributions of samples of X-ray-selected clusters out to the virial radius (e.g. Smith et al 2005;Ebeling et al 2009;Richard et al 2010b;Zitrin et al 2012). Importantly, lensing also enables the study of distant background galaxies that would be unobservable without the magnification provided by the cluster lens (e.g.…”

“…Finally, individual galaxies can be assigned with free masses to be optimized by the minimization procedure, to allow more degrees of freedom deviating from the initial imposed LTM. This procedure has been shown to be very effective in locating multiple images in many clusters (e.g., Zitrin et al , 2012bZitrin et al , 2013Zitrin et al , 2015, even without any multiple images initially used as input (Zitrin et al 2012a). Most of the multiple images in MACSJ1149.5+2223 that were found by Zheng et al (2012) were identified with this method.…”
