Class III malocclusion and bilateral cross-bite in an adult patient treated with miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expander and aligners

Abstract: This case report describes the use of a miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expander and aligners to correct bilateral cross-bite and crowding in an adult patient with a Class III skeletal pattern. A digitally designed surgical guide was three-dimensionally printed and used to accurately insert four miniscrews into the palate; these were employed to anchor a novel miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expander appliance without any dental anchorage. Cone-beam computed tomograms before and after miniscrew-assisted rapi… Show more

“…Mouth breathing can also cause muscle imbalance, postural axis alteration, disorganization of muscle groups, inhibition of nasal afferent nerves, decreased pulmonary compliance, and restricted chest expansion as well as alveolar ventilation. 2 Once the nasal airway is obstructed, reducing airflow, the patient starts breathing through the mouth, causing air to arrive faster to the lungs. With less effort to breathe, the entire ventilatory mechanism is compromised, with reduced diaphragm action and less strength of the respiratory muscles.…”

“…1 Thus, as a literary corollary, the NSARME technique is adequate for patients with incomplete maxillary bone maturation and transverse maxillary deficiency that cannot be corrected by fixed apparatus. 4,5 Another indirect benefit of maxillary expansion techniques is the improvement of upper airflow reducing respiratory distress, promoting the increase of air cavity. 5 Thus, the most accepted age for performing NSARME varies widely according to the literature, being proposed for patients with a maximum age of 14 years in women and 16 years in men, according to.…”
