This entry and Classical Inheritance I provide a wide background of the classical inheritance relevant to literature written in Britain in Latin, French, Irish, Old and Middle English, and Scots between the fall of Rome and the fifteenth century. This entry concentrates on post‐Conquest and late medieval Britain (1066–c. 1500).
