Classification of Canal Control Algorithms

Abstract: Abstract. Different control algorithms for the regulation of irrigation canals have been developed and applied throughout the world. Each of them can be characterized according to several criteria, among which are: the considered variables (controlled, measured, control action variables), the logic of control (type and direction), and the design technique. The following text presents definitions of these terms and a classification of the algorithms detailed in the literature. To summarize and compare algorithm… Show more

“…Those distributed parameters systems have dynamics represented by hyperbolic SaintVenant Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). This problem has been previously considered in the literature using a wide variety of techniques (see the use of classical linear control theory by Malaterre et al (1998), Papageorgiou and Messmer (1989), Weyer (2002)). Some of them take into account the uncertainties and apply some robust control approaches (e.g., Litrico and Georges, 1999).…”

“…Este sistema puede considerarse un sistema de regulación orientado a las Comunidades de Regantes porque se trata de un sistema de control sin mecanismos de actuación hidráulicos, tales como compuertas en línea, las cuales necesitan del concurso de complejos algoritmos de cálculo, como los mostrados en Soler (2003) o en Malaterre et al (1998), para determinar sus movimientos.…”

“…(Malaterre, Rogers, & Schuurmans, 1998) gives a thorough classification of all types of control methods used on water systems. This trend of implementing more advanced control systems is in line with the increasing capability over the last decade to implement controllers in 'real time'.…”
