Classification of Low Back Pain With the Use of Spectral Electromyogram Parameters

Abstract: The use of spectral parameters to classify subjects with low back pain from those without appears to have merit. Compared with discriminant analysis, logistic regression provided an equally powerful method for classifying these two groups but did not overfit the data. Models based on 60% of maximum voluntary contraction demonstrated results comparable with those of previous research using 40% and 80% of maximum voluntary contraction.

“…The current study would support the latter conclusion. Peach and McGill [28] were able to discriminate between back pain subjects and controls with a sensitivity of 94% and a specificity of 100%, using a method similar to Roy's. Again, their sample size was relatively small and their normal controls much younger than the back pain subjects.…”

“…By changing the lower limb and trunk position and support condition, or by unbalancing trunk muscle movements, it is possible to increase trunk muscle activities 8,9) . In this study, muscle activities of EO and GM increased more during exercises performed with the unstable surface under trunk (condition 2, condition 3) than the unstable surface under the lower limbs (condition 1), and the greatest activities were seen during exercises performed with unstable surfaces under both the trunk and lower limbs (condition 3).…”
