Classification of Wastewater Reuse for Agriculture: A Case Study in South Korea

Abstract: There are several types of wastewater reuse for agriculture, and an explicit classification is necessary before providing the proper management plan for the specific type. The objective of this study was to classify types of agricultural wastewater reuse for safe and sustainable wastewater irrigation. Three criteria were applied based on the reuse circumstances in Korea: (i) whether wastewater diluted with fresh water (direct/indirect); (ii) whether planned by government agencies (planned/unplanned); (iii) tre… Show more

“…Particularly in water scarce regions, wastewater reuse in the agricultural sector can be very helpful in sustaining freshwater resources. Besides, treated wastewater can contribute to an appreciable amount of necessary nutrients for plants [3]. Therefore, the use of reclaimed water for agricultural irrigation has been reported in at least 44 countries [4].…”

“…Consequently, sustaining plenty of clean and high quality of water will be a main issue for future human beings worldwide. One of the ways to solve this problem is to reuse wastewater effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs); WWTP effluents can be supplied to industrial and agricultural sectors after proper treatment [3,4]. The treatment using reverse osmosis (RO) membranes has been broadly used in wastewater reclamation plants because the RO process can produce high quality of reused water for different industrial purposes [5].…”
