“…From a developmental perspective, both sudden and more gradual climate events can increase children’s exposure to short‐ and long‐term risk factors at the biological level (e.g., disease, malnutrition), at the microsystem level (e.g., increased family stress, reduced parental capacity to protect their children), in the meso‐ and exosystems (e.g., intergroup violence, incapacity of health and other services to meet high levels of need), and in the macrosystem (e.g., forced migration, breakdown of social order; UNICEF, ). Exposure to reoccurring and cumulative risks is particularly harmful to health and psychological development, with consequences including PTSD, depression, aggression, and ineffective coping styles (see Sanson, Burke, et al, ; Sanson, Wachs, et al, ; Toussaint, Shields, Dorn, & Slavich, ).
