Climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies in drylands of Northern Karnataka

Abstract: This study was carried out in Vijayapura and Bagalkot districts of Karnataka to assess the adoption of improved technologies by dryland farmers to mitigate effects of climate change. Primary data was collected from 240 farmers using multi-stage random sampling technique. Nearly 70% farmers experienced the decreased and uneven distribution of rainfall, 35% farmers experienced untimely rainfall and 48% farmers experienced increase in temperature. This unpredictable variation in climate especially rainfall and te… Show more

“…The annual average rainfall of district is 633 mm which is not uniformly distributed over the district and predominant soil types were red and deep black soils. Vijayapura district is located in the northern part of Karnataka, low annual and unimodal rainfall with medium to deep black soils with diversified system of cropping (Dupdal et al, 2022) and lies between 15 o 50' and 17 o 28' North latitude and 74 o 54' and 76 o 28' East longitudes. The average rainfall of district is 594 mm with more than 50 percent of rainfall received during rabi season.…”

“…Adoption of micro-level agro-advisory services helped farmers in their farm planning, better crop management, efficient utilization of existing farm resources while improving the productivity and farm incomes (Dupdal et al, 2021). The farmers sustained crop yields by adopting climate resilient indigenous and modern scientific technologies like manipulating sowing dates, mixed farming, crop diversification, alternate cropping systems and drought tolerant varieties (Dupdal et al, 2022). It is suggested that ways and means of estimating TOT for the whole farm (farming systems approach) have to be developed to measure the profitability of agriculture at farm household level.…”
