Climate change on Twitter: Content, media ecology and information sharing behaviour

Abstract: This article presents a study of the content, use of sources and information sharing about climate change analysing over 60,000 tweets collected using a random week sample. We discuss the potential for studying Twitter as a communicative space that is rich in different types of information and presents both new challenges and opportunities. Our analysis combines automatic thematic analysis, semantic network analysis and text classification according to psychological process categories. We also consider the med… Show more

“…Temperature, pressure and light intensity collected by huge crowds of smart phone owners tagged with high‐precision GPS depict an exquisite map (Overeem et al , ; Sosko & Dalyot, ). This smart phone‐embedded device‐based collection method benefits from promising geographic resolution, deployment and mobility. Social networks: People's evolution of attitude towards long‐term meteorological phenomena and short‐term emergency communications can be extracted by mining their opinions from social network sites (SNS) (Liu & Zhao, ; Sisco et al , ; Veltri & Atanasova, ; Rossi et al , ). As free communication platforms, social networks accommodate different angles and attitudes expressed by people of different backgrounds and roles.…”

“…The mechanisms behind different types of weather are very complicated and almost beyond the control of human beings. Thus, the observation, forecasting as well as alerting and responding to these weather situations (particularly severe weather) play significant roles in meteorological services (Schafer, ; Veltri & Atanasova, ). To help measure and predict weather and climate change, vast amounts of manpower and funds have been invested into meteorological and other related research areas, which has brought meteorological research into an era of ‘big data’(Greengard, ).…”

“…O grande volume de links encontrados reforça a ideia de que o Twitter é bastante usado para partilha e atualização de informação (Recuero, 2009;Veltri & Atasanova, 2015).…”

“…We chose to exclude retweets as the study of original tweets has received little research attention [Veltri and Atanasova, 2015] and we are interested in examining this "first degree of sharing" [p. 3]. The stream of data generated during this timeframe was further analysed to ascertain the nature and interest in politically relevant general and scientific topics by the public and the level of scientific discussion in the political debate [Beacco et al, 2002].…”
