Climatic variation in the high mountains of central Mexico: Temperature and precipitation indices at Nevado de Toluca volcano

Show more

“…At 4,200 m asl, snowfall is scarce, at least that is how it was observed during the study period, and its duration is a few days due to the rapid recuperation of the air temperature. The precipitation regime found in this work, in relation to altitude, emphasizes what has been pointed out by Soto et al (2020) in the Mexican high-mountain system.…”

“…For its part, the thermal transition from winter to spring, as well as the pluvial transition from summer to autumn, favor the greater thickness of snow. The low precipitation regime in this mountain during winter has been previously pointed out byOntiveros- González et al (2015) andCortés-Ramos et al (2019); on the other hand,Soto et al (2020) state that during the months of higher temperature, the precipitation regime increases in the Nevado de Toluca volcano (4,680 m asl), 260 km away.…”

“…It is the largest Neogene active volcanic arc in North America (Suter et al ., 2001; Ferrari et al ., 2012) that comprises the highest elevations in Mexico including the top‐10 highest volcanoes. Its alignment is in an east–west direction from the southern Gulf of California coast to the Gulf of Mexico (Yarza, 2003; Ferrari et al ., 2012; Neyra‐Jáuregui, 2012; Soto et al ., 2020). The main axis divides the catchments of Rio Grande de Santiago and Rio Lerma (Rio Lerma‐Santiago) to the north and Rio Balsas to the south.…”
