Clinical Analysis of Five Methods Used to Treat Condylomata Acuminata

Abstract: Objective: Treatments for condylomata acuminata (CA) include pharmacotherapy and surgical therapies, but each treatment has its limitations. The aim of this study was to investigate the virus clearance rate, wart cure rate and safety of 5 methods on CA. Methods: 361 patients diagnosed with CA were divided into groups A (<0.5 cm), B (0.5-2.0 cm) and C (>2.0-4.0 cm) according to the maximum diameter of their lesion. Five treatments were compared in each group, and the clinical outcomes were evaluated during foll… Show more

“…The primary goals of treatment are removal of the visible warts and prevention of recurrence. The many methods in the therapy of condylomata acuminata include cryotherapy, electrodessication, CO 2 laser, trichloroacetic acid, podophyllin resin 10%–25%, and imiquimod 5% cream [2,3]. Among them, imiquimod is the sole FDA-approved medication for combating condylomata acuminata.…”

“…Among these, due to the localized PDT treatment, the most common application is the treatment of different manifestations of HPV, 24a,224,231,232,233,234 e.g., acral 233,235,236,237,238,239,240,241,242 and facial 243,244,245 warts or warts in the genital region (Condylomata acuminata). 219,246,247,248,249,250,251,252,253,254,255,256,257 In addition, antiviral PDT has been of interest in the treatment of recurrent respiratory papillomatosis. 248 Apart from treatment, ALA can of course also be employed in the fluorescence diagnosis of HPV infections.…”

“…For lesions with a diameter <0.5 cm ALA PDT is proposed, for lesions >2.0-4.0 cm cryotherapy or CO 2 laser treatment followed by ALA treatment is recommended, and for lesions with a diameter 0.5-2.0 cm a combination of ALA-PDT and cryotherapy is suggested. 250 Though more feasible for smaller lesions, the treatment of large Condylomata acuminata (Buschke-Löwenstein tumor) has been reported, too. 260 In the cells ALA is transformed to PpIX, which is the active PS.…”

“…For lesion smaller than 0.5 cm in diameter PDT was preferred based on virus clearance rate, wart cure rate and safety. For lesions between 0.5 and 2 cm PDT combined with cryotherapy was the most effective, whereas larger lesions might be treated by either CO 2 laser or cryotherapy followed by PDT …”

Histological evaluation will demonstrate koilocytes as a symptom of viral infection.…”
