Clinical Comparison of the Baxter MicroScan Yeast Identification Panel™ and the Vitek Yeast Biochemical Card™

Abstract: To determine the reliability of the Baxter MicroScan Yeast Identification Panel, processed by the Walkaway-96, and the Vitek Yeast Biochemical Card, 150 clinical yeast isolates (30 Candida albicans, 67 Candida species, not albicans, 26 Torulopsis glabrata, 13 Cryptococcus neoformans, 4 Saccharomyces cerevisiae, 6 Trichosporon beigelii, 3 Rhodotorula species, and 1 Geotrichum species) were tested on both systems. Results were compared with those obtained by the API 20C and the appearance of yeast cells on cornm… Show more

“…The commercially available yeast identification methods (1,2,4,5,9,(13)(14)(15)17) have easily identified the common yeast species; however, uncommon and newly described species present a significant challenge. Phenotypic characteristics often cannot distinguish between species that have overlapping phenotypic characters.…”

“…The API 20C system possesses promise for the differentiation of some dematiaceous fungi (3). By comparison, the latest updated Vitek yeast biochemical card provides correct identifications of between 89.7 and 97.2% (1,2,4,8). Isolates yielding incorrect or no identification with the Vitek system typically comprise strains that are uncommonly isolated from clinical specimens.…”

“…Isolates yielding incorrect or no identification with the Vitek system typically comprise strains that are uncommonly isolated from clinical specimens. Like the API 20C system, the majority of identifications with the Vitek system are available after 24 h of incubation, with 48 h of incubation being required for some slowly growing yeast iso- (6,8,12). The inability of the Mi-croScan system to accurately identify Cryptococcus neoformans is of concern.…”
