Clinical evaluation following the use of mineralized collagen graft for bone defects in revision total hip arthroplasty

Abstract: Revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) with massive bone loss has been a real challenge for orthopaedic surgeons. Here we describe an approach using mineralized collagen (MC) graft to reconstruct acetabulum and femur with massive bone defects. We identified 89 patients suffering acetabular or femoral bone defects after primary THA, who required revision THA for this study. During the surgery, MC was applied to reconstruct both the acetabular and femoral defects. Harris hip score was used to evaluate hip functio… Show more

“…Our previous study had predicted that nHA collagen plug might be an ideal bone graft material. 1921 In our recent study, 22 good results had been obtained, but there was no enough evidences to prove its effectiveness, especially the evidences of tissue reaction and the implant degradation. Because of these shortcomings or defects, a further research of bone regeneration and resorption of two materials is necessary to advance membrane properties, particularly the rate of materials degradation proceeding at varying time.…”

“…23 Results have found that our experimental group which used porous mineralized collagen plug alone produced more new bones compared with the blank control group by X-CT analysis. In our new study, Huang et al 24 suggested that massive bone defects of acetabulum and proximal femur were reconstructed completely by mineralized collagen graft, and radiographs taken at 3rd month, 6th month, and 12th month indicated the bone grafts were well remodeled. Beside new bone formation, the biodegradation of the material was also another important factor to be considered.…”

“…кроме того, растет число пациентов, подвергшихся неоднократным ревизиям с тяжелыми дефектами костей [4]. при этом ревизионные операции являются технически более сложными из-за наличия рубцовых изменений параартикулярных мягких тканей, структурных изменений кости, а также проблем с удалением ранее установленных конструкций [6].…”
