Clinical Evaluation of Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cell Transplantation After Angioplasty for Diabetic Foot

Abstract: The multilineage differentiation potential of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (HUCMSCs) holds therapeutic promise for non-healing ulcers and tissue regeneration. The present study evaluated the effects of HUCMSC transplantation after angioplasty for treatment of diabetic foot. Included in the study were 53 patients (72 limbs) with severe symptoms of Fontaine II-IV diabetic foot accompanied by varying degrees of lower extremity arterial disease. The patients were randomly apportioned to a control gr… Show more

“…In accordance with the present results, previous studies have indicated that MSCs therapies achieved therapeutic effect on diabetes or its complication [10,[12][13][14][15]. A phase I trial involving 8 patients, which investigated the therapeutic potentials of intra-arterial allogeneic BM-MSCs treatment for CLI, indicated that improvements of resting pain, ABI, and transcutaneous oxygen pressure were found after cell therapy [16].…”

“…Following careful screening of titles and abstracts, 399 articles were excluded leaving 7 articles that fulfilled the predefined inclusion criteria and were included in the final analysis [20][21][22][23][24][25][26]. A total of 6 publications were full-text articles out the 7 studies [20,[22][23][24][25][26], whereas 1 publication was a meeting conference [21].…”

“…No significant change was noted with regard to the outcomes investigated, with the exception of the degree of heterogeneity in the TcPO2 group that was decreased following the removal of the study by Qin et al [20]. The funnel plot was not used to assess publication bias as it was deemed inappropriate, as recommended by the Cochrane handbook due to the small number of studies included [27].…”
