Clinical implication of HLA class I expression in breast cancer

Abstract: BackgroundHuman leukocyte antigen (HLA)-class I molecules on tumor cells have been regarded as crucial sites where cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) can recognize tumor-specific antigens and are strongly associated with anti-tumor activity. However, the clinical impact of HLA class I expression in breast cancer has not been clarified.MethodsA total of 212 breast cancer patients who received curative surgery from 1993 to 2003 were enrolled in the current study. HLA class I expression was examined immunohistochemica… Show more

“…Although previous reports have shown HLA class I downregulation, particularly in breast cancer, 7 - 9 our results revealed that most of the tumors exhibited high expression of HLA class I molecules and that the expression within the tumor area was higher than that outside (unpublished data).…”

“…The down regulation of HLA class I expression was significantly associated with lymphatic and nodal invasion in studies conducted by Kaneko and his colleagues [35]. Therefore, cancerous HLA class I down regulation seems to be conducive to metastasis to other organs.…”

“…In a cohort of 212 patients, downregulation of HLA class I expression was found in >30% of breast cancer samples and those patients with preserved HLA class I expression had better disease-free survival (Kaneko et al, 2011). Breast cancer cells can gain resistance to NK cell-mediated killing by expressing lower levels of the NK cell receptor ligand, MICB, whose expression is regulated by the metastasis-associated microRNA, miR-10b (Tsukerman et al, 2012).…”
