Clinical input into designing a PACS

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate clinical attitudes and expectations in the implementation of a neuroradiology picture archiving and communication system (PACS). A 1-page survey of expectations and clinical attitudes toward a neuroradiology mini-PACS was dist¡ to 49 full-time faculty members in the departments of neurosurgery, neurology, and otorhinolaryngology at an academic center. Interest in viewing soft-copy images was moderate to very high for over 89% of clinicians. AII clinicians were comforta… Show more

“…A survey conducted by Yousem and Beauchamp (2000) looked at three key issues clinicians hoped PACS would help improve upon: the length of time between ordering the exam and receiving the results, lost films, and lack of previous films for comparison. Through the alleviation of these problems, clinicians resoundingly hope to greatly improve the care to the patient.…”

“…There are also security issues for physicians in terms of Federal patient health care privacy laws such as Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act(HIPAA) over such a network, many of which are encrypted and secure using secure socket layer (SSL) or https encrypted services. 124,125 Another consideration for telestroke and teleneurology is neuroimaging access, in particular the remote viewing of simple neuro- and more advanced neurovascular imaging of such patients. Some of these companies offer integrated picture archiving and communication system (PACS) at an incremental fee, 125 while other hospitals are able to grant similar remote (once credentialed) access to imaging similar to that provided to their local physicians, 126 which can then be accessed separately from the robotic or audiovisual telestroke or teleneurology encounter.…”
