Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) broken out and spread rapidly nationwide at the beginning of 2020, which has brought huge impacts to people and work. The current situation of prevention and control is severe and urgent guidance for clinicians, especially for the medical systems. In the hope of providing a reference and recommendation for the prevention and control of the COVID-19, we carried out research to improve the quality of patients care and prevention during this epidemic.Methods: All of the involved health care personnel were rapidly trained to use personal protection equipment in our department. The managements of the surgery patients and association of two periods were described and analyzed. We reviewed and compared the patients’ discharged records in our database who underwent surgery in the Department of Bone & Joint Surgery at Peking University Shenzhen Hospital, who were discharged between January 1st to March 1st in 2019 and January 1st to March 1st in 2020. Both chi-squared test and Student’s t-test were performed to determine the relationship between the two periods.Results: Analysis revealed that gender, class and duration of surgery, and anaesthetization had no significantly differences between two periods (p＞0.05). However, age and blood loss had significant relationship of the two periods (p＜0.05).Conclusions: The results of the study imply that we have been benefited from the strict flow charts in management of perioperative for orthopedic patients, which could be a valid tool in routine clinical practice and a consultation for clinicians during pandemic of the COVID-19.

In the hope of providing a reference and recommendation for the prevention and control of the COVID-19, we carried out research to improve the quality of patients care and prevention during this epidemic.Methods: All of the staff were trained rapidly to master personal protection in our department. We reviewed the patients’ discharged records who underwent surgery in our department during January 1st to March 1st in 2019 and January 1st to March 1st in 2020. The managements of the surgery patients and flow charts were described and analyzed. Post-operation outcomes of the patients including duration, complications, surgical site infection (SSI), system infection, re-operation, and mortality. Both chi-squared test and Student’s t-test were performed to determine the relationship between the two periods in term of post-operation outcomes.Results: Descriptive statistics analysis revealed that demographic of the patients between the two periods is similar. We had been benefited from the strict flow charts, smart robot and protection equipment in management of perioperative for orthopedic patients. With the help of the strict flow charts and smart equipment, post-operation outcomes of the patients revealed that the rates of the complications and re-operation had been reduced significantly (p＜0.05), while duration of operation, SSI and system infection had no significantly difference between two periods (p＞0.05). No patient and staff caught COVID-19 infection or mortality during the epidemic. Conclusions: Our study indicated that medical quality and efficiency were affected little with the help of strategies described above during the epidemic, which could be a reference tool for medical staff in routine clinical practice for admission of patients around the world. What’s more, the provided strategies, which may evolve over time, could be used as empirical guidance and reference for orthopedic peers to get through the pandemic and ensure the normal operation of the hospital.

Objectives: Real-life overview of bladder cancer (BC) surgical management in Italy during the first month of COVID-19 pandemic (March 2020) with head to head comparison of the data from March 2019, considered “usual activity” period. The aim is to confront performance of Academic Centers (AC) vs Non Academic Centers (NAC) as well as non-COVID Centers (nCC) and COVID Centers (CC). Patients and methods: During April 2020, an e-mail survey was sent to 32 Sections of Urology across Italy. It contained 14 multiple-choice questions focused on activities during March 2019 and March 2020. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics (v26) software. Results28 centers answered to survey. AC and NAC showed statistically significant differences (chi-square test p<0.05) about number of physicians assigned to Covid wards (p=0.001), Trans-Urethral Resection of Bladder Tumour (TURBT) (p=0.046) and cystectomies (p=0.037) performed in March 2020 (p=0.037). In 2020, AC performed more surgical procedures compared to NAC. In 2019, AC had more procedures per Operating Block (OB) (p=0.015) and greater number of emergent Trans-Urethral Resections (TUR) (p=0.014), while NAC had more TURBTs. CC had more patients (pts) both evaluated for gross hematuria (p=0.017) and requiring haemostatic Trans-Urethral Resection (hTUR) in 2019. In 2020 nCC had more surgeries per OB (p=0.001), TURBTs (p=0.030) and cystectomies (p=0.034) than CC. ConclusionThe COVID-19 pandemic represents an important challenge for cancer centers, in the context of an extremely dynamic clinical and political situation which requires maximum flexibility to be appropriately managed.
