“…Our study showed high prevalence rates of post EVD symptoms (9%-50%). Arthralgia (50%), headache (44%), and myalgia (32%) had the highest prevalence, supporting existing evidence [ 28 , 35 , 40 , 43 , 44 ]. Generally, most of the somatic symptoms were relatively more prevalent (except for numbness of hands and feet, and hearing loss) within the first year.…”

“…Ebola virus disease (EVD) is characterized in humans by hemorrhagic fever with high mortality rates ( Feldmann et al, 2013 ; Feldmann and Geisbert, 2011 ). EVD is caused by Ebola virus (EBOV), a member of the Filoviridae family, which in addition to causing acute disease, can also persist in the body of survivors at immunologically protected sites, such as the brain, eyes, or testes ( Glynn et al, 2017 ; Jacobs et al, 2016 ; Kelly et al, 2022 ; Sow et al, 2016 ; Varkey et al, 2015 ). Sexual transmission of filoviruses is now well recognized while it was first suspected with Marburg virus more than fifty years ago ( Martini and Schmidt, 1968 ; Slenczka and Klenk, 2007 ).…”

“…The emergence of post-Ebola virus syndrome (PES) among survivors further highlights the complex aftermath of Ebola virus infection. This syndrome has been observed in a small subset of individuals who have successfully recovered from the virus (109,110). Despite overcoming the acute phase of the disease, some survivors may experience long-term health effects that encompass a range of symptoms and conditions.…”

“…PES manifests with a range of clinical symptoms, encompassing conditions like arthralgia, uveitis, arthritis, and psychological stress (109). The health implications faced by EVD survivors have undergone comprehensive evaluation, shedding light on various aspects of the syndrome.…”
