Cloning and Functional Characterization of a Constitutively Expressed Nitrate Transporter Gene,OsNRT1, from Rice

Abstract: Elucidating how rice (Oryza sativa) takes up nitrate at the molecular level could help improve the low recovery rate (<50%) of nitrogen fertilizer in rice paddies. As a first step toward that goal, we have cloned a nitrate transporter gene from rice called OsNRT1. OsNRT1 is a new member of a growing transporter family called PTR, which consists not only of nitrate transporters from higher plants that are homologs of the Arabidopsis CHL1 (AtNRT1) protein, but also peptide transporters from a wide variety of gen… Show more

“…OsNRT1.1, which is involved only in LATS for nitrate (Lin et al 2000), was constitutively expressed in roots under nitrate concentrations below 200 µM. OsNRT2s and OsNAR2s expression in shoots OsNRT2s and OsNAR2s were also expressed in shoots (Fig.…”

“…However, the functional roles for the other members of NRT2 remain uncertain. In rice, although the function of NRT1 has been revealed (Tsay et al 1993, Lin et al 2000, investigations of NRT2 have not been carried out. To develop efficient use of nitrogen in rice, it is important to reveal the roles of NRT2 family genes.…”

“…Similar to AtNRT1.2, OsNRT1 is a constitutive gene encoding a pure low-affinity nitrate transporter and is only expressed in the root epidermis [13]. However, phylogenetic analysis indicated that AtNRT1.2 and OsNRT1 belong to different groups of the NRT1(PTR) family (Fig.…”

“…All the evidence indicates that nitrate transporters cannot transport peptide [11][12][13], while peptide transporters cannot transport nitrate [14], i.e. peptide transporters and nitrate transporters are functionally distinct.…”
