Clotting Tests and other Tests of the Haemostatic Mechanism in Cirrhosis of the Liver and their Diagnostic Significance

Abstract: Because of the important role played by the liver in the synthesis of the plasma proteins, investigations of changes in the plasma protein pattern are used in the diagnosis of liver dysfunction. Some of the blood coagulation factors are proteins with specific activities which can be relatively easily and rapidly analyzed. Quantitative analyses of blood coagulation factors have therefore been utilized as liver function tests. The following clotting factors are more or less decreased in parenchymatous diseases o… Show more

“…In the present study the prothrombin time (PT), which is sensitive to variations of the levels of fibrinogen, prothrombin, factors V, VII and X, showed good correlation with the serum albumen concentration, though it was also found to be normal in 37 % of the non-bleeders and two of the patients who bled. An abnormal -Bengtsen (1962) and agrees with the results of Coccheri (personal communication) and Owren (1969) with Normotest (which is a standardized, commercial version of the PaP test). The superiority of the PaP in the present work is presumably related to its special sensitivity within the range of concentrations of the three relevant clotting factors found in patients with chronic liver disease.…”

“…In the present study, BT is prolonged in 34% (102/300) patients, which agrees with the study of Hedenberg and Korsan-Bengtsen. 9 The CT can remain normal even in the presence of severe individual factor deficiency. 10 In the present study, abnormal prolongation of CT was observed in only 32 (10.6%) out of 300 patients.…”
