Cloud Computing Research Profiling: Mapping Scholarly Community and Identifying Thematic Boundaries of the Field

Abstract: The aim of the study was to map the scholarly community interested in research on cloud computing and to identify thematic boundaries of the field. The methodology of research profiling, representing bibliometric descriptive studies, was applied to achieve the aim of the study. Using research profiling for mapping the cloud computing field can be considered as an innovation. Although the research profiling methodology has been widely used across various subject areas, including Computer Science, Social Science… Show more

“…On the other hand, the analysis variables were established from the review of previous bibliometric studies in the area of social sciences, with a topic similar to the object of study (Batanero et al 2019;Hinojo-Lucena et al 2019;Oravec et al 2019;Rodríguez-García et al 2019;Sudolska et al 2019):…”

“…countries, research institutions, journals, authors). Instead of a traditional topic profiling [33][34][35], we followed the benchmarks of other bibliometric studies [36,37] and applied keywords co-occurrence analysis to assess the trends in scientific production and to identify and explore major thematic areas as well as emerging topics within the research field. VOSviewer software, developed by the researchers of Leiden University [38,39], was used to support the analysis process and visualize the findings.…”

“…Firstly, research profiling [19] supports the analysis of scientific production distribution in the field and identification of leading contributors. We employ general publication profiling, which together with subject area profiling and topic profiling constitute the research profiling framework [9,24,25]. The aim of general publication profiling is to recognize the most productive countries, research institutions, source titles, and authors conducting research on energy efficiency in cloud computing.…”

“…Co-word analysis shows a high potential for mapping the cognitive structure of the field [27]. Therefore, we use it to replace a traditional topic profiling focused on identifying leading topics in a field from the perspective of source titles, authors, subject areas, and core references [9,24,25], with science mapping displaying leading thematic areas and relationships among them and their components, as well as "hot" emerging topics. We employ VOSviewer [28,29] science mapping software to support our keyword co-occurrence analysis and visualize its findings.…”
