Cloxacillin nanostructured formulation for the treatment of bovine keratoconjunctivitis

Abstract: Highlights Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is a widespread, contagious ocular disease that affects especially dairy breeds. The mucoadhesive nanoparticle promoted a greater ability of adherence of cloxacillin benzathine to the ocular surface. The mucoadhesive nanoparticle-based formulation promoted clinical cure with a low number of doses of antibiotics.

“…Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is a contagious ocular disease of cattle characterized by ulcerative keratitis, corneal edema, and conjunctivitis. This disease is the most common eye condition of cattle [1] and occurs worldwide, including in Kazakhstan [2][3][4]. Although corneal ulcerations in cattle may heal with limited corneal scar formation, it is not uncommon for IBK to result in complete or partial loss of vision [5].…”

“…The use of polymeric nanocarriers promotes sustained drug release in the ocular mucosa, maintains a high concentration of nanostructured antimicrobial agents, reduces the number of doses, and minimizes the antibiotic residues in mammalian milk. In a study by Fonseca et al, PCL-coated CS nanocapsules containing cloxacillin were developed to treat infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) caused by Moraxella bovis [ 99 ]. This was the first study in Brazil using nanoantibiotics for the treatment of clinical IBK.…”

“…nfectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) has been associated with ocular disease characterized by lacrimation, photophobia, conjunctivitis, keratitis, corneal opacity, and corneal ulceration in cattle and, the disease causes severe economic loss in cattle breeding worldwide as a highly contagious disease (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6). Moraxella bovis (M.…”
