Clunio boudouresquei sp. n. and Thalassosmittia ballestai sp. n., two Tyrrhenian marine species occurring in Scandola Nature Reserve, West Corsica (Diptera: Chironomidae)

Abstract: Clunio boudouresquei sp. n. and Thalassosmittia ballestai sp. n. are diagnosed and described based on associated material of male adults, pharate male adults and pupal exuviae recently collected in the marine littoral zone of Scandola Nature Reserve (Cala Litizia, Punta Palazzu, Focolara Bay, West Corsica). While C. boudouresquei sp. n. is described as male and female adults and pupal exuviae, T. ballestai sp. n. is described only as male adult and pupal exuviae. On the basis of some atypical characters found … Show more

“…Thus far Thalassosmittia is represented in a multigene phylogenetic study only by an unidentified species from the California coast (Cranston et al, 2011), but its status as a sister group to Clunio is robust (Figure 1, node B). According to Moubayed‐Breil and Dominici (2019) their new Tyrrenian species of Thalassosmittia brought the total number of species in the genus to 10 including some inland nonmarine species in China and the Amazon. Evidently deeper sampling of these noncoastal taxa is required to test the diversity and direction of evolution (and indeed validate the identity) of these species (Andersen et al, 2013, p. 264).…”

“…The documented diversity of Clunio is more diverse than its sister group ‐ Moubayed‐Breil and Dominici (2019) estimate it at 26 species. All are marine/maritime and are much more modified in the imagines than in the immature stages.…”
