Co-Creating Climate Adaptation Pathways in Coastal Cities: A Practical Guide for Engaged Scholars and Urban Designers

Abstract: As the repercussions of climate change materialize, coastal cities are often at the forefront of experiencing environmental impacts like flooding and storm events. In addition, anthropogenic vulnerability drivers, like industrial activity in the near-shore environment, may accelerate shoreline erosion or nuisance flooding through the loss of natural shoreline buffers and increased ship traffic. This interdisciplinary study applied a participatory mixed-methods approach, co-creating climate change adaptation pa… Show more

“…Acknowledging and including social and human sciences within climate action will strengthen climate resilience by empowering citizens and creating an integrated and focused network throughout society (see [89]). A framework for such participatory co-creation was recently developed by [97], while practical examples of co-created early warning adaptation pathways were recently published that included Living Lab and citizen science approaches [98,99].…”

“…Over the past few centuries, the global average surface temperature has increased by 0.75 • C [1], and the effects of climate change are apparent. Frequent rainfall due to global warming has affected more frequent flooding, and coastal countries tend to suffer more natural hazard events [2]. The developing country groups in the Pacific Islands are considered to be particularly environmentally vulnerable [3].…”
