Co‐initiating function of silk peptide in free radical photopolymerization

Abstract: Silk peptide used as a co‐initiator in type 2 photo‐initiator has not been known. In this study, the photoinitiation system is composed of the sensitizer, the synergist and silk peptide with low molecular weight (<3,500), which is used to initiate photopolymerization of common monomer. The same photopolymerization was performed to evaluate the co‐initiating ability of four essential amino acids of silk peptide, and of four pentapeptides synthesized using them as substrates, respectively. It was suggested that … Show more

“…Of note, many amino acids and nucleotides, the structural building blocks for proteins and DNA, respectively, contain tertiary amine functional groups and may act as synergists in Type II photopolymerization reactions. 13,36,37 For example, Kim and Chu investigated the use of the amino acid arginine, in combination with riboflavin to polymerize hydrogels. They worked to optimize the ratios of riboflavin and arginine to increase the physical stability of the resulting hydrogel.…”

“…Silk peptide is a biocompatible peptide, which can initiate free radical photopolymerization in the presence of camphorquinone. However, its initiation efficiency as co‐initiator is unsatisfactory [ 11 ] .…”
